A Ride to Work: Supporting Independence
Dustin’s story is a powerful reminder of how essential transportation can be for those who can’t drive themselves, and the impact it has on their lives. Diagnosed with autism at just 18 months, Dustin has faced his share of challenges. But at 24, he’s thriving with a job he loves at Walmart in Bolivar, Missouri, where he’s worked for two years.
Dustin has had his driving permit for about two years and dreams of driving himself to work one day. However, as his mom, Cindy, explains, “He’s doing so well, but he’s just not quite ready to drive yet.” While Cindy is proud of Dustin’s progress, juggling her full-time job, military reserve duties, and helping Dustin get to his shifts can be overwhelming.
On weekends, Dustin can often find rides with friends or family. But during the week, especially when Cindy’s job requires her to be out of town or when she’s called up for military service, finding a ride can be tough. Because if Dustin couldn't get to work reliably on the days he’s scheduled, he wouldn’t still have this job. That’s where New Growth Transit has been a game-changer.
For Cindy, New Growth Transit isn’t just about getting Dustin to work—it’s about peace of mind. Knowing he’ll get to work safely and on time, with drivers she can trust, has been a huge relief. “Even though he’s 24, I still want him to call me when he gets there,” Cindy says with a smile. New Growth Transit has lifted a huge burden for their family and has become a true blessing.

Dustin’s story isn’t unique. Earlier this year, CBS Sunday Morning and the Readers Digest in September 2024 shared the incredible story of a blind man who walked to his job at Walmart in Cabot, Arkansas. When a woman organized a Facebook group to help him, the response was overwhelming—over 1,500 volunteers offered to drive him to work. That story captured the hearts of many, highlighting the powerful impact of community-driven support.
Here in Missouri, New Growth Transit is creating a similar impact, with over 70 volunteer drivers helping residents across more than a dozen rural counties. These drivers are helping individuals like Dustin maintain their independence, access jobs, and stay connected to their communities.
How More Can Help
But the need for transportation continues to grow, and we need more volunteer drivers to help meet that demand. Becoming a volunteer driver is a meaningful way to give back. You’ll choose your availability, drive your own car, and be fully supported by the New Growth team. Plus, you’ll be reimbursed $0.67 a mile. Your impact will be felt every day by the families and individuals who rely on you.
If you’d like to be a part of this important work, consider becoming a volunteer driver. Together, we can continue changing lives—one ride at a time.
