When Michelle and her husband retired to Warsaw in Benton County, Missouri, they were drawn by the tranquil beauty of the lake and the promise of a slower pace of life. Her husband’s retirement from a city job brought them closer to nature, but Michelle, a retired CNA with years of experience in home healthcare, wanted more than just scenic views—she sought purpose.

That purpose arrived in the form of a simple brochure for New Growth Transit. Michelle spotted it in town and immediately felt drawn to the idea of becoming a volunteer driver. With her background in healthcare and a knack for helping others, it seemed like a natural fit. On top of that, being on disability made having something meaningful to do even more appealing.

Now, Michelle says she couldn’t imagine her life without volunteering for New Growth Transit. The program, which supports rural Missouri communities by providing free transportation, has given her a way to stay active, explore her surroundings, and make a difference—all on her own schedule.

“I love the flexibility,” Michelle shares. “I get to decide when I drive. Plus, it’s been such a nice way to see parts of Missouri I wouldn’t get to visit otherwise.”

Michelle enjoys the variety of her trips, whether it’s a quick drive through her Benton County neighborhood or a longer journey to Columbia, Sedalia, or other areas in central Missouri. These trips have introduced her to new places and people, helping her feel more connected to her community.

More Than Just a Ride

For Michelle, being a volunteer driver is about more than just transportation—it’s about providing access and opportunity. She often meets people who rely on New Growth Transit to get to medical appointments, grocery stores, or jobs they wouldn’t otherwise be able to reach.

“It’s so fulfilling to help people get access to essentials,” Michelle says. “Knowing I’m making a real difference in someone’s life—it’s hard to describe how good that feels.”

Her role as a volunteer driver has also allowed her to build new connections in her community. Moving from the city to a rural area can feel isolating, but Michelle’s time behind the wheel has brought her closer to the people and places that make Missouri special.

Spreading the Word

Michelle is an enthusiastic advocate for New Growth Transit. She recommends the program to anyone who might need a ride and encourages others to consider joining the volunteer driver network.

“If you’re looking for a way to giveback, I can’t recommend it enough,” Michelle says. “It’s flexible, it’s rewarding, and it’s such a great way to get to know the area and the people in it.”

Join the Movement

New Growth Transit serves as a vital lifeline for rural Missouri communities, offering transportation that helps strengthen connections, support businesses, and improve access to critical services. Volunteers like Michelle are the heart of this network, driving change one mile at a time.

Consider becoming a volunteer driver or donating to support the mileage reimbursement for those who are able to volunteer.

Together we are making a huge difference in our communities!
