What began as a shared hobby for Jennifer and Kurtis Jones has become a place for community connection in Clinton, Missouri. The couple’s love for trading card games like Pokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh, and Magic The Gathering (MTG) sparked a dream to create a business in their hometown where enthusiasts could buy, trade, and play locally. These games aren’t just casual pastimes; they are cultural phenomena with dedicated fan bases worldwide – and an enthusiastic fan base, believe it or not, even in our local rural communities!

Take MTG as an example— this game has a following so immense that it hosts conventions called Magic-Cons around the world. These events, much like Comic-Cons, draw thousands of attendees. Enthusiasts are drawn not only by the camaraderie and competition but also by the potential value of the cards themselves. Jennifer recalls one famous, recently discovered card that resold for millions of dollars. Buying a set of cards feels like playing the lottery, blending the thrill of chance with the joy of a beloved and enduring hobby.

Jennifer and her husband saw that this global enthusiasm had roots in their own rural community, and the vision to serve local enthusiasts needed room to grow. Fueled by their commitment, they started by investing heavily in their dream, channeling their own money paycheck after paycheck into renovating a retail space and building the proper turn-around inventory.

While their dedication was unwavering, this investment strategy left them stretched thin. They needed additional funding to scale their inventory and create a sustainable business model. Seeking a solution, they visited their bank, which suggested connecting with New Growth—an economic development organization that provides microloans and personalized business support.

As a micro-lender, New Growth is able to offer smaller loans than a traditional lender can, which for a small business can make a big difference.

With access to these funds, Jennifer and her husband are able to stock more products and attract more customers. But the financial boost wasn’t the only benefit. Jennifer highlights the personalized attention they received during the process. “Kim from New Growth communicated everything so clearly,” she shared.“I never felt rushed or overlooked. It felt like we had someone in our corner.”

The Power of Connection

Much like a coffee shop or restaurant might be, The Game Box isn’t just a store; it’s a vibrant community hub where players come together to connect over their shared passion for trading card games. In a small town without many recreation options, having a welcoming space like this is especially valuable. Players can gather for hours-long games, trade cards, and share strategies, creating bonds that extend beyond the table. The in-person game play provides a social outlet that’s hard to replicate online.

Jennifer credits New Growth with helping their business thrive and encourages other entrepreneurs to consider the organization. “It’s hard running a small business in a small town,” she said. “New Growth gave us the support we needed to get to the next level.”

Jennifer and Kurtis’ journey reflects the broader mission of New Growth: helping small businesses succeed faster and strengthening communities in the process. As The Game Box continues to grow, it stands as a testament to what can be achieved with determination, passion, and the right resources at the right time.

Especially at this time of year, if anyone has a trading card enthusiast on their Christmas list, Jennifer is happy to help them find just the right gift!
