Shared Love for Helping Others
Meet Don and Lori, a husband and wife from Cedar County who have found a new passion in their retirement: volunteering as drivers for New Growth Transit.
Their shared love for helping others has become a way of life, and they both speak with genuine warmth and enthusiasm about their experiences a volunteer drivers.
When asked why they volunteer, Lori a retired administrative assistant, gave an answer that’s simple yet powerful: “I’m a giver.” For her, the opportunity to provide rides to those in need is deeply fulfilling. She knows firsthand the difference it makes in people’s lives—getting to the doctor, the store, or even just out of the house can be life-changing for those who are otherwise isolated. “The people we drive are so grateful for the help,” she adds, her voice filled with compassion.
And because Don and Lori get reimbursed for every mile they drive and they have a whole staff to support the ride coordination, they’re free to simply enjoy their volunteer work. Don, who spent years working as a mechanic and service writer, now finds joy in giving back without expecting anything in return. “For years, I charged people for the work I did,” he says, “but now, I can provide this service for free to the riders, and that feels really good.”
For Don, it’s not just about providing transportation. He’s quick to point out that the rides they offer often serve as a crucial opportunity for social interaction. Many of the people they drive are lonely and isolated, and simply having someone to talk to can make a world of difference. “There are so many people who really need this help,” Don explains, recounting stories of several specific individuals he’s driven who live alone and rarely see another person.
Together, Lori and Don have created a routine that not only supports their community but also strengthens their bond as a couple. They admit, with a smile, that there’s a little friendly competition between them about who drives more miles each week or who picks up the slack when the other isn’t available. This playful rivalry adds an extra layer of enjoyment to their volunteering experience.
Despite the lighthearted competition, Lori and Don are united in their mission. They both speak passionately about how much they love being able to help others. For them, being volunteer drivers is more than just a way to pass the time—it’s a meaningful and impactful way to give back to their community.
If you’re looking for a way to make a difference and connect with others, Lori and Don encourage you to consider becoming a volunteer driver. “It’s a wonderful way to spend your time,” Lori says, “and the difference you can make in someone’s life is incredible.”
