The Story of BACO Transport in Butler, Missouri

In the quiet city of Butler, Missouri, population 4,257, BACO has become a remarkable example of how small-town determination and neighborly spirit can solve big problems. This all-volunteer taxi service, based in Bates County and fondly known as BaCo,started as an idea among a few local residents who saw a need and wanted to lend a hand. Today, it operates as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a dedicated board of community members, two fleet vehicles, and a handful of volunteers, quite literally, driving the mission forward.

A Humble Beginning with a Big Impact

The BACO team launched with minimal resources—just a retired cop car with a 2-way radio, a few index cards, and a legal pad to manage ride requests. But now they’ve doubled their fleet with a second donated car which together serves as the go-to “taxi” rides for residents within Butler’s city limits. Despite their small size, BACO’s impact has been big: for just $1 each way, Butler residents can access essential destinations like the doctor’s office or local Walmart, keeping this invaluable service affordable for everyone.

BACO’s operating budget is as modest as its pricing. Fueled mainly by ride fees and occasional donations from local organizations or individuals, BACO stretches every dollar, with the biggest expense being vehicle insurance. Since BACO volunteers don’t get paid, they don’t require special driver’s license to drive, allowing retired community members to easily stay active while giving back signing up as drivers or as dispatch answering the phone and scheduling rides still with just a legal pad and index cards. And, the local senior center generously allows them to operate out of a room in their building. BACO runs entirely on goodwill and generosity, and it’s that spirit that keeps their wheels turning.

Robert Jennings, current BACO president and a volunteer driver says, “When you find good volunteers, they pretty much take care of themselves. It doesn’t take a big crew, but it takes a few good folks who are dedicated to making it happen.”

A Partnership with New Growth Transit

The relationship between BACO and New Growth Transit exemplifies how small-town partnerships can maximize resources and serve a wider range of needs. With New Growth Transit covering extended trips across 14 counties in Missouri, BACO serves the short, local rides in Butler. Both services refer clients to each other, ensuring residents are directed to the best fit for their transportation needs. This collaboration is crucial in connecting people to the resources they need and filling gaps in service, especially in a rural area where public transportation options are sparse.

Additionally, BACO’s drivers often volunteer for New Growth Transit, broadening their reach and impact. It’s a win-win for the volunteers, too—many of them retired folks eager to stay connected, meet new people, and make a difference in their community. Whether they’re taking someone across town in Butler or on a longer journey to Kansas City or somewhere else through New Growth Transit, they’re a lifeline for residents who depend on these services to maintain independence and stay connected.

Keeping BACO Rolling

As BACO continues to operate, they continue to need support, especially in managing insurance costs and securing sustainable funding. They’ve built a solid foundation with their low-fare model, and while local support has helped them keep going, there’s always room for growth. Future support, whether from local donors or new volunteers, is essential for BACO to keep rolling.
